According to E! News, though ABC probably plans on having Grey’s Anatomy run for a long time, Sandra Oh plans on taking her leave after the upcoming 10th season. Oh played Dr. Cristina Yang since the series first took the world by storm in 2005. Here’s a statement from the actress herself:
“It’s been a great privilege to play the character of Cristina Yang on GA and I am both sad and excited to see where this, her final season will take her,” Oh says in a statement. “It was an emotional and deeply creative decision for me and I feel fully supported by Shonda Rhimes and the writers. It’s so rare in an actor’s life to be able to explore and grow a character so fully, so completely. I am profoundly grateful to everyone at GA for the opportunity. I’m excited to celebrate and cherish every moment of my final season on GA with the fans who have made it all possible.”
I have to admit that I’m kind of sad. I don’t watch Grey’s Anatomy as faithfully as I used to, but I do agree with most when they say that Sandra Oh is/was one best parts of the show. Of course, I have faith that creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes will turn this into a super positive happening. The woman knows what she is doing and never seems to let us down—see Scandal and Private Practice for proof.
Continuing on, I did mention that ABC wants to keep the show on air for a long time and to do that, it’s been mentioned by Network President Paul Lee that “he hopes to see the show continue, even if it loses some original characters”.
I don’t know how the rest of you feel about that, but I for one definitely have mixed feelings.
However, if they are able to pull it off, I applaud them. Slowly phasing out a group of regulars is a tough, tough thing to do. If you don’t believe me, try to remember the very last season of Scrubs—specifically season 9. It seemed clear to many that Scrubs was supposed to end season 8, especially since the last episode of the aforementioned season was called “My Finale”. However, popular demand resulted in new season that wasn’t as good as the rest and cast of series regulars that weren’t as fun to watch. The show still had heart nevertheless.
But unfortunately, sometimes heart is not enough to bring in viewers. Quality factors in too.
ABC, if you plan on doing this, learn from Scrubs and please end the show on a high note.
That’s all I ask.
And Sandra Oh, you will be missed.
Here’s to hoping that you, Rhimes, and ABC move on to bigger and better things.
