I couldn’t resist.
Anyways, according to ScreenRant, Mark Wahlberg recently sat down to be interviewed by Yahoo! Movies UK to talk about his movie 2 Guns. Eventually, the subject of comic book/superhero roles came up. When asked who he could see himself playing, he mentioned a familiar metal-bound hero:
“I would like to take over the ‘Iron Man‘ franchise for Robert Downey…[but] it’s just one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [so] I’ve never been asked.”
And to that I say: Eh.
I’m not really sure how that would go.
Granted, Wahlberg has come a long way in his career and has appeared in various movies like Ted, The Other Guys, The Fighter, and many more. However, I don’t know how I would feel if he ever stepped into the Iron Man suit.
Sounds like a weird match.
Like vinegar and jelly.
Or some sh*t like that.
Moving on, we all know that though Robert Downey Jr. has signed on for The Avengers: Age of Ultron and the untitled Avengers 3 movie, he will eventually hang up the suit and move on to other things. Marvel President Kevin Feige explained the situation, earlier in the year, to Entertainment Weekly like this:
“I believe there will be a fourth ‘Iron Man’ and a fifth, sixth, and a 10th and a 20th. I see no reason why Tony Stark can’t be as evergreen as James Bond, Batman, or for that matter, Spider-Man.”
Though, I get his point, I must say that such roles don’t become “evergreen” overnight. Hell, even the recent Spider-Man reboot left many people ready to riot. Even though I liked the new Spider-Man movie, I agree that it may have been too soon for a reboot.
I guess I’m trying to say that if you want a role to approach “evergreen” status like that of James Bond or Batman, you need to be willing to ease your audience and fan base into that, not toss it at them and expect them to be okay with it.
