Movie News / Movies / The Trailer Has Dropped

Ever since the Harry Potter movies came onto the scene in 2001, movie studios have continued to search madly for the “the next big teen thing”. This mentality has brought us sagas like the lackluster Twilight and the still filming (but much better) The Hunger Games. This phenomenon also stuck us with the I’m-not-surprised-it-flopped movie The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

Need I say more?

Seriously Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Why are you in this movie!?

Moving on, Veronica Roth‘s novel, Divergent, is another series that will soon be added to the list. In Divergent, teenagers in a dystopian future are sectioned off into different factions via government-sponsored sponsored aptitude tests.

Main character Tris, (Beatrice Prior), who is played by Shailene Woodley, finds out that she is ultimately a threat to this system because she is ‘divergent’—which means that she doesn’t fit in perfectly with any of the five, government-approved groups. Here’s a graphic of all five groups below (courtesy of Summit Entertainment):

Yup. Pretty straight forward.

The (teaser) trailer for the movie debuted yesterday during the VMAs and features over a minute of footage that introduces main character Tris, antagonist Jeanine Matthews, (the sole leader of one of the factions who is also gunning for world domination; played by Kate Winslet), and the premise of the movie. Here’s a link to the trailer below:

The movie looks interesting enough. However, what has me semi-interested is the solid-looking casting and the awesome writing team that is behind this movie. Casting includes the likes of Kate Winslet, Maggie Q, Ashley Judd, Ray Stevenson and rising stars like Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller. As for the writing team, Game of ThronesVanessa Taylor and up and comer Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman) have lent their talents to bring the movie forth.

Here’s to hoping that Divergent isn’t just another The Hunger Games and can stand on its own two feet.
