With the recent news that Pirates of the Caribbean 5 (also titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) has moved back to the summer of 2016, plot details for the delayed movie has been released.
According to Bleeding Cool (who awesomely got their hands on an earlier version of the script), the movie will include witches and one revenge-seeking ghost in particular. Jack Sparrow will be joined by a new female lead, who happens to be a bright mind that is, for one reason or another, accused of witchcraft. Witches at large will play an important role in the film, but as Bleeding Cool put it, they’ll have “somewhat less of a hoodoo flavoring”.
Moving on, if you were wondering where the film gets its title, you don’t have to look any further than the vengeful ghost that was mentioned above. This time around, another lead will take the form of a ghost. The ghost is apparently “a former member of the British military now sided with Barbossa on a revenge mission” (Bleeding Cool). And to top that all off, the film apparently opens with a somewhat, awkward wedding and will touch on the myth surrounding the Bermuda Triangle.
I admit that they didn’t have my attention until the Bermuda Triangle.
Anyways, directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg had this to say Screen Crush about the film when asked what exactly inspired the aforementioned plot:
I think we’re going a little bit back to that, the feeling of that at least. It’s a very funny, emotional script, and a great one. So it reminds us of the kind of adventure movies we grew up with – Indiana Jones movies, or movies that inspired us to become filmmakers, really. So it’s almost for us like coming full circle (Spoken by Ronning).
We believe movies should be an emotional experience. Even if it’s a comedy, at least the comedies we respond to have that as well, and like we said, we found that in this ‘Pirates’ movie as well. So we’re really looking forward to telling that story now. (Spoken by Sandberg)
In addition to all that, Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush will be returning to reprise their roles as Captain Jack Sparrow and Barbossa. There’s no word yet on the casting of the female lead or the ghost lead, but details are expected to emerge as time goes on. Production for the movie is expected to kick off in the middle of 2014.
