Tonight, the season 3 opener for “The X Factor“, US edition, transpired, with Simon Cowell, Kelly Rowland, Demi Lavato, and Paulina Rubio on the panel. Like in any talent show, there was the good, the bad, and the outright horrific.
But hey. It all made for good entertainment.
The first contestant of the night was a young man by the name of Carlito Olivero. Olivero sang “Stay” by Rihanna, which garnered him a yes from all four judges as well as the screams and cheers of the crowd. He had a nice little vioce, and I could see him going somewhere in the future.
Following his departure from the stage, things went all the way left. I don’t know what happened, but it wasn’t good. Of course, Simon was incredibly mean and brutally honest, and actually went so far as to compare someone to the iceberg that brought down the Titanic.
There were instances where people sang so passionately, not realizing how horrid they sounded, that it made you feel sorry for them. Then, there were some that you couldn’t help but release the laugh that began building inside of you from the moment they hit the first note.
The show turned back around when 54-year-old Lille McCloud hit the stage and performed a heart-wrenching rendition of “Alabaster Box“, by CeCe Winans. Her voice was so smooth and soulful that the judges would have been foolish to pass her up. There were so many people in tears during her performance, Demi and Kelly included.
I was even sitting in front of my television like:
The only duo that was shown making it to the next round was a cute little couple named Alex and Sierra. Honestly, when they first showed them, I had the same sentiment as Simon, and that was that they were going to be so corny, but I was pleasantly surprised. They both have quite beautiful voices, especially Sierra. They performed their own slowed version of “Toxic” by Britney Spears.
One of the of the most inspirational moments of the night was when a thirteen year old girl named Rion Paige made her way to the stage, and sang “Blown Away”, by Carrie Underwood. Paige has a condition known as arthrogryposis, which causes curvature in one’s hands. The part that shocked me the most is how strong and controlled her voice is at such a tender age. Simon, the most difficult to impress, was even stunned.
If tonight was any indication, this season of “The X Factor” will be ridiculously hilarious, but more importantly filled with pure talent.
