It seems that Benedict Cumberbatch experienced his own bit of darkness years ago and now, he’s telling his story.
Back in 2005, Cumberbatch and two friends were driving north of Durban. They were on their were back to the set of the 2005 miniseries To the End of the Earth when all of a sudden, one of their tires went flat.
“It was cold, and it was dark. I felt rotten. We were wary because that’s a notoriously dangerous place to drive. Then, poof, the front-right tire blows. So we got the spare, but that meant getting all of our luggage out. We were like sitting ducks, adverts for—not prosperity, necessarily, but materialism.” He said.
And lo and behold, his paranoia proved to be prophetic. No sooner had the flat happened, a group of six armed men revealed themselves and held Cumberbatch and his friends up.
“They were like: ‘Look down! Look down! Put your hands on your head! Look at the floor! And they started frisking us and said: ‘Where’s your money? Where’s your drugs?” Cumberbatch recalled. “And at that point, this adrenaline of fight or flight just exploded in my body. I was like, ‘Oh f*ck, we’re f*cked.”
Getting emotional, the actor recalled how the group put threw them in a vehicle and proceeded to drive off with them. When Cumberbatch complained that his were causing him to him lose feeling in his limbs, they then proceeded to stuff him in the car’s trunk.
After some more time passed, the vehicle stopped and his kidnappers took from the trunk and dumped him on the ground. Cumberbatch confessed that he was beyond terrified at that point:
“I was scared, really scared. I said: ‘What are you going to do with us? Are you going to kill us?’ I was really worried that I was going to get raped or molested or just tortured or toyed with in some way, some act of control and savagery.”
Thankfully, the group let him go and disappeared. Cumberbatch was eventually rescued by a benevolent stranger.
“I looked into this black man’s face, and I cried with gratitude.” He said. He also commented that the whole ordeal ended up having a deeply profound effect on him. “It really, really enriches your values in life,” he remarked. “It’s incredibly important.”
