J.J Abrams Not Directing the Next ‘Star Trek’ Film

Well, I could’ve told you this way beforehand.

I mean, the dude has Star Wars: Episode VII on his plate. Of course he isn’t going to be directing Star Trek 3 or whatever.

But anyways, J.J. Abrams recently confirmed with Collider that he will not be directing the next Star Trek film. He mentioned that it felt “bittersweet” to be leaving the franchise in someone else’s arms.

He’s not totally abandoning it however. If you’re a fan of Abrams, you’ll be happy to know that he will still be on board in a producing capacity:

“Whomever it is that directs the film will be someone we all know is going to keep the cast and crew in good hands,”He said.

He also commented on how grateful he was for the opportunity in the first place and how he wanted the next person to be able to “do their own thing”:

“I feel very lucky to have been part of it, and it definitely feels like the right time to let someone come in and do their own thing. I certainly don’t want someone to come in and try to do what I would have done. We want to hire someone who’s gonna come in and bring their own sensibility.”

Simon Pegg weighed in on the matter also:

“I’m very excited to see what comes next, despite feeling jealous of whomever that person is. And whoever he gets to direct it will be someone [Abrams] trusts implicitly. We’ve also got each other, as well. The whole cast is very united. It will be interesting. It will be fun to get a different take on it. We’ve gotta keep evolving it. I guess it can only be good for the story, as long as it’s the right person.”

Since there’s no official date or title (or anything for that matter) on the next Star Trek film, I say they’re in good shape.

For now, anyways.
