TV News Roundup: ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Arrow’, and More

Moving back to campus is definitely hard sh*t and as a result, I’ve been noticeably M.I.A the last twelve or so hours. But because news waits for no one whatsoever, here’s are some TV news updates:

John Barrowman to Return to Arrow

In light of recent news that Dylan Neal will be joining Arrow as Dr. Anthony Ivo, Arrow is adding one more big bad to that list. John Barrowman, (who previously appeared on Arrow as villain Malcolm Merlyn), is set to reprise that role. This was recently confirmed by TVLine (though if you attended this past years Comic-Con, then you probably already knew).

Yes, John Barrowman. You are f*cking awesome.

As of now, however, no one knows if Merlyn will be appearing via flashbacks or hallucinations (a la Ra’s Al Ghul style in The Dark Knight Rises). Meryl previously suffered some pretty mortal arrow wounds at the conclusion of season one, but as most of us know when it comes to anything that pertains to comic books, no one is ever permanently dead.

I’m looking at you, Agent Coulson.

Joel Fry Joins Games of Thrones

Looks like we can add yet another person to the growing season 4 cast.

In addition to news that people like Roger Ashton-Griffiths (who will be playing Mace Tyrell), Indira Varma (who will be playing Oberyn’s lover Ellaria Sand), Mark Gattis (who will be playing Tycho Nestoris), Joseph Gatt (who is rumored to be playing Wilding chiedtan Styr [aka Magnar of Thenn], Michiel Huisman (who will be replacing Ed Skrein and playing Daario Naharis), and Hafthor Julius Bjornsson (whi will replace be replacing Ian Whyte and playing Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane), Game of Thrones has officially cast Joel Fry (10,000 B.C.) as Hizdahr zo Loraq. Such a role serves to be a key one in George R.R. Martin‘s fifth book.

Loraq will appear in the upcoming season as “a young scion of an Ancient Meereenese family who crosses paths with Daenerys Targaryen” (Entertainment Weekly). This will be interesting to see play out, since Targaryen is currently on the cusp of liberating the slaver city known as Mereen (after rounding up an army in Astapor).

Tell ’em, Daenerys!

Game of Thrones will be returning for its fourth season in Spring 2014.

Modern Family Spinoff Coming; Rob Gibble to (Possibly) Lead

First of all, oh my f*ck. Did we really need yet another spinoff?

I shall name this epidemic Spinoffilis.

Avoid it.

On a more serious note, according to Deadline the Emmy-hoarding comedy, Modern Family, will be spawning a spinoff that might see Rob Riggle (21 Jump Street) in the lead. If the spinoff ends up being greenlit, it would follow Riggle’s character Gil Thorpe (real estate agent and rival to Phil Dunphy, who is played by Ty Burrell).

Deadline also made it super clear that this is one of multiple ideas for a potential Modern Family spinoff. Whatever happens, you can bet that Steve Levitan (co-creator and executive producer of Modern Family) will be penning the script, while Paul Corrigan, Brad Walsh, and Christopher Lloyd (co-executive producers and co-creator, respectively) will probably be along for ride too.

Like I previously lamented about, this will be another case of Spinoffilis and will join other projects like Better Call Saul (Breaking Bad), a possible The Walking Dead spinoff, The Flash (but this one is slightly more welcome in my opinion), Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (Once Upon a Time; still iffy about this one), a NCIS spinoff (Like we didn’t have enough of this with the CSI series/franchise), and a possible Agent Carter spinoff (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D; I still think a S.H.I.E.L.D movie would be a better approach, but that’s just me).

– New The Walking Dead Promo Hits the Web

Since season 4 of The Walking Dead is not too far away now (it premieres October 13), AMC has decided that it is high time to do some heavy press. As a result, a new, short trailer featuring fan-favorite Carol, who seems to be in some trouble.

In the trailer, we see Carol saying the following to a never before seen young girl: “If you wanna live, you have to become strong.” After this occurrence, we see Rick trying to alert Carol to a group of walkers advancing upon her, even as she remains unaware.

Holy sh*t. I CAN’T WATCH.
