Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Update: New Director, New Photos, and More

Even though the ever elusive Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special trailer (from Comic-Con 2013) has yet to hit the f*cking web, we have some semi-good news for Doctor Who fans. Not only is the special a month away (trust us, if we didn’t have a countdown for Thor: The Dark World, we would have one for Doctor Who special), but new photos from the big event have emerged, as well as news on a new director and comments from Stephen Moffat about Christopher Eccleston.

WHOA. Calm yourself, people.

Starting with news related to the always amazing Christopher Eccleston, showrunner Stephen Moffat recently got candid about trying to get the Ninth Doctor to reprise his role (special thanks to SFX):

I had an initial contact with Chris and, in a very amiable and gentlemanly way, he didn’t feel that he could come back to it. There wasn’t any big fuss about it — I had a couple of meetings with him, and he was perfectly pleasant, and indeed quite enthused about the show, but he just doesn’t do that, it’s just not him.”

So, it sounds like Eccleston wasn’t trying to wear out his welcome in the role. So, contrary to popular belief, his exit wasn’t as ridiculous or as controversial as previously thought.

Yes, Christopher. Yes you were/are.

Moving on, Ben Wheatley recently spoke with ScreenDaily about being tapped to direct the first and second episodes of series 8, which will be featuring Matt Smith passing on Doctorial (is that a thing? I’m not entirely sure) duties to Peter Capaldi:

I am very excited and honored to be asked to direct the first two episodes of the new series of ‘Doctor Who.’ I’ve been a fan since childhood (Tom Baker is my Doctor if you are asking). I’ve been watching the current run of ‘Doctor Who’ with my son and have discovered it all over again. The work that has been done is amazing. I’m really looking forward to working with Peter Capaldi and finding out where Steven Moffat is planning to take the new Doctor.”

Mr. Wheatley, Whovians everywhere share your enthusiasm.

Pretty much.

Moving on, DoctorWhoTV recently unveiled a couple of new photo scans showing off people like John Hurt, Clara Oswald, David Tennant’s Doctor, Matt Smith’s Docor and etc. You can check out the photos below:

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more. Other than that, don’t forget to tune into the special on November 23!
