The film and stage actor (who won in Oscar in 2005 for his role in Capote and plays Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games franchise) was found alone in his New York City apartment on Sunday, Feb. 2, according to the NYPD. The police department received a 911 call reporting an unconscious male shortly after 11:30 a.m in the West Village neighborhood. The New York City Medical Examiner is working to determine the exact cause of death. The New York Post however reports that he was discovered by a friend and he died of an apparent drug overdose.
Many celebrities have taken to social media sites like twitter to mourn the loss.
He is survived by his longtime partner Mimi O’Donnell and their three children.
Our prayers and thoughts go out to his family in this time. Rest in peace, Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
