Music News From Around The Web: Kesha, Drake, and More

Ello, party people!

As you know, it has been quite AWHILE since we updated you on anything music-related.

Like seriously.

That last thing we did was mostly sh*t on the Grammys.

I believe that I did. *drops mic*

That being said, as I promised, we will be attempting to post a lot more since it is summer time and we have a bit of extra time on our hands from now and then.

On that note, here’s some recent music news from around the web:

Meek Mill is headed back to jail…again

Really? I swear to God. I hope he doesn’t plan on pulling a T.I.–as in promising to change and then getting arrested like 30857302984 more times.

As to Billboard and Philadelphia’s Fox 29, Meek Mill is headed back to jail after apparently violating his probation. Meek Mill was initially on probation after due to be convicted of drug and gun charges in 2008. He ended up serving eight to months in jail for his foolishness, with five years of probation following quickly afterwards.

But, you know, apparently that hasn’t lasted?

Recently, Mill allegedly posted a photo of himself with a gun. His camp has declined to comment about the matter whatsoever, but many are assuming that this is the incident that is going to cost him about three to six months in prison.

Vinyl records are making a comeback…in Britain.

Let me explain, dammit.

Realistically, this isn’t new, really. Many artists and fans alike have stated that the record as well is the CD album will always have a place in music, even if it is a small one. Which, you know, isn’t wrong. I mean, like to splurge on an album every now and then if I deem it worthwhile.

Anyways, according and Nielsen Soundscan’s recent midyear report, vinyl records have not only seen some rapid growth in the US (it was up over 40% just in the first half of 2014), but they have also seen their highest sales in the UK since 1991 (reportedly, 6 million units have been sold).

That’s a lot of records.

Azealia Banks leaves record label Universal Music.

I’m sorry. Am I supposed to be surprised? Cuz’ I’m not.

In other news—that isn’t really news—Azealia Banks has reportedly parted ways with with Universal Music. The rapper was with label for about two and half years and decided to finally free herself.

And trust me when I say that she is exceedingly happy about it:

Moving on, here’s to hoping that Azealia can finally flex some creative muscle. She has already proven that she has mad chops, especially after an awesome single like “212”. All she needs to do now is stop fighting with everyone and everybody—T.I. and Tiny come to mind—and focus on her music.

Kesha tackles the difficult subject that is body image in an essay for Elle UK.

Kesha has been through a fair amount this year. After checking herself into rehab for about two months—for an eating disorder—she got a weird amount of flak over it and was hit with speculation about whether she was really seeking help for a drug addiction/substance abuse problems.

However, the “Timber” singer is setting the record straight in Elle UK, silence the malicious rumors once and for all. I find this quote particularly compelling:

Sure, I’ve written songs about partying, but my dirty little secret is that I’m actually incredibly responsible,” she writes early on, describing her thoughts during the trip to the rehab center. “I take my music and career very seriously, and certainly didn’t land in this situation from partying. But I was cut off from the outside world and I imagined people making up stories at a time when what I really needed was support. (Elle UK).

Speak the truth, Kesha.

She goes on to explain that music was her escape early on in life, but how music become a double-edged sword when it came to her body.

All in all, I wish the singer well and applaud her taking care of herself, because let’s be real: if she doesn’t do it, who will (especially in a merciless industry like the music industry)?

Artist BOY/FRIEND recently released his new single “I Do That”.

Let me just start this off by saying that this dude is hard as f*ck to find when you are trying to write about him. I was recently introduced to his music by a friend who is outstandingly more music-inclined than I am. However, now that I’m legitimately trying to write something about him, I can’t find the dude anywhere.

JESUS, internet! Y U DO DIS?

Anyways, BOY/FRIEND has been around for a hot minute and has been gaining some good street cred due to his smooth songwriting skills. Though he still remains unsigned as of late, the R&B artist is gearing up to release his sophomore EP—which has been titled Low Key.

In order to generate some positive buzz for the upcoming project, BOY/FRIEND has decided to release his single “I Do That”. On a track that features the likes of Jason Scott and MNTN, BOY/FRIEND sings about doing the little things for his woman, including watching Game of Thrones and Girls with her.

Which makes him a keeper according to a lot of people.

Photographic evidence of Chris Brown and Drake in a studio finally emerges.

For all those people who have been following Drake and Chris Brown’s beef very, very closely, you may or may not have been surprised to hear that the two let bygones be bygones last October.

Nope. Not at all.

At that time, Brown announced that the two were hanging in a studio together. Of course, many fans remained skeptical and even demanded proof of such a happen.

Well people, you finally have it. Here is your proof:–_OpXAQ

The photo was apparently posted on Instagram by blogger Stalker Sarah. Other than that, no one really knows what song or project the two are working, but knowing the internet, we are bound to find out soon.

Legendary R&B Artist Babyface is working on a new album.

Excuse me, what?

That’s right.

The one and only Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds is coming at you with a new album soon enough.

And it will be first solo album in seven years.

How I imagine his fans reacting right now.

Still fresh off of his group effort with Toni Braxton—on Love, Marriage, & Divorce—it seems that the legendary R&B artist has recently been bit by the album making bug.

Babyface recently sat down with Billboard and discussed the upcoming album. The artist is aiming to release a single around September (I will be looking for that) and plans to release the new album around Valentine’s Day.

Which—if I may add—is the strategically GENIUS, seeing as he will be reaping the reaping the full benefits/numbers of “cuffing season”.

He also went on to add that fans can expect the album to have a “groove to it” (Billboard).

Whatever the case, I’m excited to hear this news and look forward to that album release.

SZA recently released her new single “Divinty”, which features Jill Scott.

It’s no secret that singer SZA has A LOT of respect for fellow singer Jill Scott. There’s so much respect that I can’t help but illustrate it with this tweet from SZA:

And on that note, it would appear that her respect has paid off as the two singers recently collaborated on SZA’s new single “Divinity”. The track is quite lengthy and features the two singers and their chopped of vocals on a track that plays up some very soothing, down-tempo music in the background.

I can get down to this (maybe not in this exact fashion).

I gotta say: I really dig this. SZA’s voice is massively smooth, while Jill Scott’s voice borders on the saccharine. Put the two together and it makes for quite the sound.

But don’t just take my word for it. You can check out the song below:

John Legend unveiled his music video for “You & I” yesterday.

And it is absolutely stunning as well as beautiful.

If you are very in tune with your feelings, prepare to drop a tear.

The only thing I have every cried about is [REDACTED]’s death in Marley and Me. And this may have to be the exception.

Not only does the video feature celebrities like Laverne Cox and Legend’s wife, Chrissy Teigen, but it also features an array of different women of all shapes, sizes, colors, creeds and etc.

The video sets out to celebrate beauty and self-love as well as encourage the acceptance of these things, as these women are already perfect as they are.

I am warning you.

Be prepared to drop that tear.
