Down at the Box Office: ‘Lucy’ Wins Out This Weekend and ‘Hercules’ Comes In Second

This week we have a brand new No. 1 down at the box office.

Lucy proved what can happen when your movie has serious star power. The film features Scarlett Johansson, of Avengers fame, and Morgan Freeman (of general fame) leading as it earned $44 million on its first weekend. It demolished in the weekend gross even though some of the reviews weren’t that stellar. Since I have yet to see the movie, I can’t give it full side-eye.

So, it gets a *shrug* for now.

Taking the second spot is Dwayne Johnson’s Hercules (2014).  But since I have no clue or reason why this happened (Did we really need two Hercules movies in the same year?), I’ll let The Rock tell you himself.

Then–sadly–Dawn of the Planet of the Apes fell two spaces and into third place.

  1. Lucy, $44,025,000     ($44,025,000*)
  2. Hercules (2014),  $29,000,000     ($29,000,000*)
  3. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,  $16,400,000     ($172,089,000*)
  4. The Purge: Anarchy,  $9,896,000    ( $51,272,000* )
  5. Planes: Fire & Rescue, $9,303,000      ($35,121,000* )
  6. Sex Tape,  $5,975,000       ($26,877,000* )
  7. Transformers: Age of Extinction,   $4,600,000      ($236,352,000*  )
  8. And So It Goes,  $4,552,000         ($4,552,000* )
