It seems to be the norm now. Black folks getting killed almost daily. Their only crime: being Black. Race relations seemed to reach fever-pitch after the death of Mike Brown, but it appears that was just the beginning. Darren Hunt of Saratoga Springs, Utah, was gunned down by police in front of Panda Express for looking “suspicious”. Hunt was traveling with a toy sword to complete the look of his cosplay character Mugen from the anime show Samurai Champloo.
It is said that an Anime convention had happened the day before the incident, so maybe Hunt was still high off of the excitement of the convention activities. Either way, he was killed for owning a toy sword. For three days, the reason for his killing had not been issued by police. After three days, this is what was said:
“On Saturday, police issued a brief statement saying he lunged at them with a sword. But Hunt’s lawyer says an independent autopsy shows Hunt was shot in the back and not in the front, and his mother Susan Hunt says the “sword” was a blunt-edged vanity version of a Japanese “Katana” sword he bought at an Asian gift shop.”
Since they first issued this particular statement, their story about the killing has changed. Here is the another separate accounts of Darren Hunt’s killing:
“In comments to the Guardian, the Saratoga Springs police department now claim he lunged at the officers, was “shot at,” and then was shot several more times as he “headed north.”
A witness reportedly snapped a photo of Hunt, minutes before he was gunned down.
There is another witness who apparently took a photo of Hunt while surrounded by the cops. This witness sent the photo to Darren Hunt’s mother. Her account is that there is no sword visible in the photo. If that is true, then that “he lunged at cops,” story is nonsense.
This is sad, but unfortunately, this is business as usual on behalf of America’s police as a whole. We as people need to come up with solutions to combat this issue. Lives are being lost for absolutely no reason. RIP Darren Hunt.
