Kendrick Lamar Explains Epic Verse He Dropped on ‘Control’

If you’ve been keeping up with the music world, then you know that Kendrick Lamar recently recorded a nearly earth-shattering (I’m exaggerating, obviously) verse on Big Sean‘s “Control” (where he called out people like Mac Miller, Drake, etc, etc) that had the rest of the Hip-Hop/Rap world saying: WHAT!??!?

It’s true. Here are some obligatory GIFs to prove it:

Yup.

Yup.

Yup.

Anyways, in light of all the good and bad reception, Lamar visited Chelsea Lately recently and set the record straight by explaining that his verse was merely encouraging friendly competition:

“A lot of cats that I named, they’re actually good friends of mine and I basically wanted to show that I’m competitive. When you get on the basketball court and you’re playin—”

“What the f*ck do you know about basketball?” Chelsea felt the need to insert an obligatory short joke (Good stuff, Chelsea).

“So, before music, I wanted to be Michael Jordan. (Chelsea gives him a side-eye for that) No, seriously. But like you said, I’m a small guy, I only grew to 5’6 and it deferred my dreams to writin’ rhymes…I have a lot of insight on hoopin’…Looks may be deceivin’ but…” Chelsea added that he might grow some more, but at 26, Lamar denied it.

Lamar later added that his verse in control was supposed to call out his fellow rappers “in a competitive nature, like basketball…You know, Kobe vs.LeBron, I’m sure they’re good friends off the court, but when you’re in that booth, you have to be able to annihilate whoever out there and that keeps the level of hip-hop alive, as far as the culture.”

Hmm.

I’m honestly glad he dropped the verse. The replies and reactions from the Hip-Hop/Rap world were priceless and I definitely agreed with what Ice-T had to sayabout the matter. If you want to see/read some of these reactions, here’s a link below:

Anyways, I’m wishing Lamar the best.
