Meet The Interns: The Movie Man

And we’re back again!

Yeah, we are.

After a wonderful interview with Just Dash (and one on the way with Christina Tenisha 🙂 ), I am back with a fresh interview with The Movie Man himself.

Most of you are already familiar with The Movie Man, as he is behind pieces like his side-splitting 22 Jump Street review and his beautiful, beautiful tribute to the late Robin Williams. That being said, I am sure that you guys are still dying to know what is going on in that wonderful little brain of his.

So, without further ado, I introduce you to The Movie Man:

L: Sup, The Movie Man? How are you?

MM: “You don’t know me, I don’t know you. We are not having this conversation!” – Rose Dawson (Titanic)

L: GREAT reference! What are your thoughts about joining The Zoo, The Movie Man?

MM: I love it. I love the look of the site. I really enjoy the fellow poster’s articles. I think it’s great 🙂

L: The Movie Man. I’m curious to know whether The Movie Man is your actual name. Are you willing disclose your real one?

MM: Since you guys are special, I guess I’d better come clean. . . My real name is NOT The Movie Man. *hangs head in shame*. My real name is far more foul and devious than you could possibly imagine. My name is Benjamin. But my friends call me Ben.

L: You’re a riot. Anyways, what are some of your favorite things?

MM: Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens. Brown paper packages tied up with string. These are a few of my favorite things!

But seriously. My favourite things include MOVIES! K-Pop (oh, so shameful. It’s so addictive for me). I’m a crazy cat man who owns four cats. Love em’. I am addicted to an Indonesian brand of 2 minute noodles named “Indo Mie.” I could live off of these noodles. These are some of my favourite things.

L: Which hero (Disney or anything otherwise) do you most identify with?

MM: Mulan. When she sang her spine-chilling song, “Reflection.” It goes:

“Look at me. I will never pass, for a perfect bride… or a perfect daughter. Can it be, I’m not meant to play this part? Now I see, that if I were truly to be myself, I would break my family’s heart.” “Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me. Why is my reflection someone I don’t know?” (Mulan)

Change all the references of females to males, and that’s how I felt as a child. I really identified with that character, because I was always scared of being myself (coming out as gay) to my family. It took me until I was 17-years-old to come out, and they were fine with it. All that worry was for nothing.

So in the end, Mulan touched me more than any other film. Very relatable to my situation growing up 🙂

L: Which villain (Disney or anything otherwise) do you most identify with?

MM: Maleficent always has and always will be my favourite. Not that watered down, pansy ass version that Angelina Jolie played, no. THE BADASS B*TCH THAT SCREAMED “BACK YOU FOOLS!” Damn! That was a villain that really scared the crap out of me as a child!

I also adore Judge Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He was a genocidal, insane man who wanted to rape a gypsy girl. That just blew my mind because it’s a children’s movie! When he sang the song “HELLFIRE!” I got such chills.

While I don’t condone what these two did, they made for the 2 most badass villains. Followed closely by Ursula, Scar, Shere Khan (don’t know how to spell it), etc. etc.

L: What’s a real-life issue that is somewhat close to your heart?

MM: A real life issue that is close to my heart is when LGBT youth are told that they are not normal. Particularly by chaplains and role-models within a teaching environment. It breaks my heart to know that every day, thousands of young minds are being poisoned to hate themselves. I am hoping to make movies to combat this serious issue, and if I can help at least one child, then it would have been so worth it.

L: If you could live in any time period, what would it be?

MM: The time I live in now is so much more preferable to me (seeing as there’s less persecution towards LGBT people). However, I have always identified with the 1970s. I love to dance, I LOVE the music of that era, I love the outfits, and in my country, THEY HAD FREE UNIVERSITY! NO FEES WHATSOEVER! So it is win-win-win for me living in that era.

L: Is that your final answer?

MM: No, that is not my final answer. I’d also love to live in a future time period. Let’s say, 2525. Just to see if we are still having wars over religion, resources, or whether the world has woken up and is starting to work together (causing no international conflicts). I’d also love to see the fashion, the music, THE MOVIES! MY GOD! *drooling all over keyboard* Yep, the future is where it’s at my friend.

L: And in that same vein, name your favorite time period as it pertains to fashion?

MM: The 1970s. John Travolta looked FAHHHHBULOUS dahling 😉 But seriously, I loved it. Not a fan of the 1930s, 40s, 50s, or 60s, or 80s fashion for Men. The 90s were great. Loved how laid back it was. The 2000s were half laid back, half try-hard. Don’t even get me started on the 2010’s… Tight ass pants, wearing beanie’s in scorching hot weather, all for the sake of looking “current.” That’s when fashion looks so ridiculous. SO the 70s is my final answer.

L: How’s your taste in music?

MM: Very, very versatile. I love every genre of music, except for two. I like a fair few rap songs, but the genre is getting so bland these days. Same goes for metal, so I wouldn’t say I LOVE those two genres. My playlist is so random, that one second I’m listening to Radiohead, then the next I’m listening to Abba, then suddenly I’m on some random K-Pop song, and then Limp Bizkit would start playing. It all gels well for me. Songs are songs, and as Popeye would put it, “I YAM WHO I YAM.”

L: Do you have a favorite artist?

MM: My favourite artists change with the seasons. Growing up, I’d always loved P!nk and Avril Lavigne. While P!nk still makes 10/10 brilliant music, Avril has gone downhill (but her songs are still catchy). They were both a big part of my life. Then in high school, I discovered Madonna. With every new album, she did something different. I loved her songs, era after era. I must love at least 2 dozen songs from her. So that would be my Top 3.

David Bowie, Queen, and Abba are the runners up.

If you meant Painting artist. Then that’s easy. Dali is my favourite. Salvador Dali. Followed by Vladimir Kush and Van Gogh.

L: Any particular reason?

MM: I keep jumping the gun and already answering the questions. See above ^^

L: Movies. Top 5. Go:

MM: My Top 5 Favourites:

1. Titanic (1997)

2. Lost in Translation (2003)

3. Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012)

4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

5. Millennium Actress (2001)

Runners up:

6. Spirited Away (2001)

7. Farewell My Concubine (1993)

8. Mulan (1997)

9. Casablanca (1942)

10. Gone With the Wind (1939)

My Top 5 Best: I did Top 10 anyway, but I could go on forever. This list is not definitive. They are ever-changing. In my humble opinion, each of these films were 10/10 perfection. I am almost certain that I’m missing out on some great ones.

1. Casablanca (1942)

2. The LOTR Trilogy (2001-2003)

3. Spirited Away (2001)

4. United 93 (2004)

5. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007)

6. Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

7. Paths of Glory (1957)

8. Atonement (2007)

9. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

10. Psycho (1960)

L: Favorite TV Show (s) (Past or Present):

MM: Past: “The Simpsons” (because now it is just shit. It used to be the best). “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” “M*A*S*H”, “Keeping Up Appearances,” “Faulty Towers,” “Blackadder,” “Father Ted,” “Seinfeld,” “Just Shoot Me,” “Breaking Bad.”

Pretty much any bad sitcom or great British comedy series.

Present: “Game of Thrones,” “Downton Abbey,” “VEEP,” “South Park,” “Family Guy,” “Bob’s Burgers,” “Archer,” “Regular Show.” Also, I do find myself watching a number of Korean dramas. haha

L: Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings?

MM: Lord of the Rings by a landslide. I love them both, but there’s no comparison. One is a really entertaining, emotional Young Adult fictional story… the other is a pure masterpiece. LOTR wins.

L: Star Wars or Star Trek?

MM: Star Wars, though I love George Takei. “But that’s none of my business.” “Oh myyyyy.”

L: The Hunger Games or The Divergent Trilogy?

MM: I’ve read the first 2 Hunger Games novels, and I’ve seen the movies. The books were great, the movies were “meh”. I’ve only seen the first Divergent film, and I really really enjoyed it. Going by that, I pick Divergent (believe it or not).

L: New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox?

MM: The Red Sox, because I once had an American teacher and I used to gawk at his accent. I made him say “Red Sox” over and over. I don’t follow baseball.

L: Los Angeles Lakers or Boston Celtics?

MM: That’s easy. The Celtics, because they’re Celts 😉 It’s that simple. I’m assuming this is basketball?

L: DC or Marvel?

MM: DC. Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman… they will always be the superheroes of my childhood.

L: How did you feel about Iron Man 3?

MM: Well… *cough* … this is embarrassing. I haven’t seen it.

L: Egad. How did you feel about Man of Steel?

MM: It was complete sh*t. NEXT QUESTION!

L: M. Night Shyamalamadingdong Shyamalan walks up to you and tells you that he is going to adapt [insert-favorite-childhood-show-here] into a movie. What do you do?

MM: Not whine like a little b*tch and actually appreciate the great movies he has made. I adored The Sixth Sense, The Village, and Signs. They are damn good movies IMO. So I would ask for his autograph, and see what direction he would take with the show. Obviously, if he f*cks up as bad as when he did The Last Airbender and The Happening, then I would stamp on his foot, snatch the plans out of his hand, and lock them in the container shed from Raiders of the Lost Ark. No one would ever find them again.

L: To test your decency as a human being: What did you think of The Last Airbender?

MM: I wanted to cry, it was so bad. It would probably be my most scathing review to date.

L: Justin Bieber tries to fight you. What do you do?

Snatch his purse out of his hands and whack it across his face. Then I’d punch him in the tit, for good measure. But seriously, I couldn’t care less about him.

L: You were married to Robin Thicke for X amount of years. Things fell apart, you broke u, and he promptly dedicated an entire album and tour to “getting you back”. What is your reaction?

MM: Our marriage fell apart because of that f*cking song “Blurred Lines.” No amount of charity work or smooth moves could ever redeem himself from that torture he unleashed upon the unsuspecting world. I love his song “When I Get You Alone.” Damn, that was my jam. Haha

L: And back to being a little bit more serious: what do you hope to bring to Sublime Zoo?

MM: I hope to bring fresh movie reviews, movie tributes, movie lists. Anything movies to the site. If all the contributors meet up, I hope to bring some pop-corn and a big bucket of orange soda. I’ll bring some Aussie flare into the site! Take it down under! But seriously, another thing I’m bringing to the site is the letter “U” in words like “colour.” 😉

L: Alright. The people thank you for your wonderfully weird interview.

MM: I just procrastinated an hour away replying to all of this. It was pretty damn fun. Thanks!
